Posting to TypePad from FeedDemon

Posted on October 27, 2003 at 01:34 PM in Web/Tech | Permalink

Nick Bradbury has posted a great tip on how to post to a MovableType blog from FeedDemon. I figured there would have to be a way to do the same thing for TypePad.

What you need to do is, in Feed Demon go to Tools > Blog this News Item > Configure Blog Publishing Tools, then click Add. Put TypePad as the Name and enter the following into the Command Line:

https://www.typepad.com/t/app/weblog/post?
is_qp=1&qp_show=tb,ca,ac,ap,cb,ex,tm,kw&__mode=edit_entry
&qp_title=$ITEM_TITLE$&qp_href=$ITEM_LINK$&qp_text=$ITEM_DESCRIPTION$

Click OK, and you will now be able to blog any news item from Feed Demon directly to TypePad by right-clicking on the news item and selecting Blog This News Item > TypePad (or by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+B if you set it as the default). When you do this, a new browser window will open up which will contain the information about the news item in a form that is pretty much the same as the QuickPost Bookmarklet Form, it will even pull the Trackback info from the news item if it's available. You can then make any other changes to the post, like adding comments or a category, then save the post. Easy!

I have written a hack for WordPress/b2 which does (almost) the same thing. Check it out at http://dinki.mine.nu/word/index.php?p=20&more=1&c=1

Help! I am new to blogging and RSS. I cannot get this tip to work: I enter the command line as above, but the entry I've created in this way, named 'TypePad', remains greyed out and I have no 'blog this' right click command. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. (I suspect i should be entering specific information for my weblog -- and I've tried doing this as and where I thought I should, but to no avail. If someone can give me an example, that would be great.)

David, you need to make sure of two things:

  • when you cut and paste the command from Glenn's post, it won't paste the whole command by default - it usually stops after "post?" at the end of the first line. Paste the command into a text editor and delete the line breaks, then paste the item into the command line in FeedDemon;
  • secondly, make sure that you are right clicking on the news item in the news list, not in the browser window of FeedDeemon. The news list will appear either between the channel group bar and the browser (if the browser is positioned on the right), or above the browser window (if the browser is positioned on bottom). FeedDemon does not allow you to blog the entry from the browser window. You may also wish to try the shortcut key combination CTRL+SHIFT+B.
  • I hope this helps.

    I'm using this code now, as part of testing out FeedDemon (software), and though it works, I can't figure out how to get the PREVIEW feature in there? Any tips?

    https://www.typepad.com/t/app/weblog/post?is_qp=1&qp_show=tb,ca,ac,ap,cb,ex,tm,kw&__mode=edit_entry&qp_title=$ITEM_TITLE$&qp_href=$ITEM_LINK$&qp_text=$ITEM_DESCRIPTION$

    In the string, where did you get the list of "options" shown with the show= command? I might wish to edit this string, and I don't know which codes may/may not be used here. Is there someplace to see them all from Typepad, and a description of each?

    Best,

    I have tried this, but the "TypePad" tool remains greyed out after I enter the above information. Any hints?

    I've added this to my FeedDemon config, the menu items are not greyed, but when I try to post I receive an Error pop up with "The system cannot find the file specified."

    I run Firefox as my default browser and have all sorts of interesting goodies installed on this machine for development etc, so it could be a very local conflict. Hopefully not. Anyone have any idea what might cause this?

    # Posted by: Mark (24.1.3.126) at Jul 29, 2004 1:38:53 PM

    Appears it is caused by something in the description of the item i was using to test. Perhaps it's too long and requires truncating or includes special characters and requires escaping somehow. Seems this is more or less a bookmarklet - perhaps I can truncate with javascript.

    There are so many reasons for nonprofits to blog that it's hard to boil them down to a few, but you've done a great job. The key to all of them -- the nugget of information I think all nonprofits should take away from your post -- is that a blog is about connecting very intimately with the unique audience you're trying to reach. It's so much more than a traditional website, which functions largely as a "billboard" for information. A blog is a place where you can create a community that centers on exactly the issues you want to discuss, with the people you want to have a discussion with. It's like throwing a big dinner party where all the people are interested in exactly the same conversation as you!
