Australia 'too white' to be Asian

Posted on October 21, 2003 at 09:54 AM in Australia | Permalink

As we all know, Australians are the most racist people, while our Asian neighbours are so egalitarian and welcoming to all. Or not..

PRIME Minister John Howard yesterday gave a bristling defence of Australia's national identity after Singapore said we would not be accepted in the region until our population was more than 50 per cent Asian.

While we're being attacked by certain groups for our "appalling" refugee policies, why don't we compare them to any other country in the region? Or how about Malaysia's land purchasing policies? The simple fact is that Australia is more welcoming of any & all nationalities than any country in the region & is one of the most 'multicultural' and egalitarian countries in the world. The next time someone tries to make you feel guilty about being an Australian, ask them what nationality they'd rather be.

I may just be a acting like dumb American but if Australia and NZ aren't part of Southeast Asia then what are they? I lived in Singapore for a year and a half (and grew to love it) but I am surprised that they have an pull on the world stage. Aren't they surrounded by countries that despise them (Malaysia & Indonesia...)? Just wondering how the opninions of a small city state could affect regional policy.

Reading his comments, it seems that he was expressing his opinion on the feelings of the region, not necessarily just Singapore's. The way The Age's article I linked reported it made it sound as if it was his opinion, but this Herald Sun report seems to put the comments back into context. I understood him to be expressing the opinion of a large section of the region, but not necessarily his own.

I think the reason Singapore has such influence internationally is because of their economic power. During the Asian economic crisis, Singapore was one of the only countries to have major cash reserves.

At the end of the day the fact is that Aus & NZ are in South-East Asia and if certain people don't like that fact because we are predominantly white then they are racist.

It's also worth noting that all the islander nations (Papua New Guinea, Tonga, etc.) are in South-East Asia but they aren't Asian either. Will they be excluding those countries until they have a 50% Asian population, or is it just a dislike of Caucasians?

There sure have been some crazy comments coming out from that part of the world lately. First the comment by Malaysia's PM about Jews running to world and now this!

I for one welcome our new Jewish overlords.

Notice that it is 50% "non-white", rather than 50% "Asian" that Mr. Tong would regard Australia as Asian.

What then is the definition of "white" according to Mr. Tong? Anglo-Saxon? Caucasian in general? Or is it anyone "non-Asian"? On top of that I wonder how "Asian" is defined. Singapore has a multi-culture society in itself so I believe they would regard the Chinese, the Indians and the Malays to be "Asian". Then why not the Pacific Islanders?

I would think Australians are more welcome to people from different races than many Asians. I'll actually say the Asians are probably the most racist people. I can say that because I am an Asian myself (Chinese who was born in Taiwan). It is much more difficult for an Anglo to be part of Asian community than an Asian to be part of "white" community.

Can't you Australians get any facts right?

In 1993, PM Goh Chok Tong advocated NZ and Australia joined NAFTA as a group, Mahathir attacked him for it, saying things like 'Australia is not Asian'...blah blah.......

PM Goh' son in law is caucasian.............

Singapore's foreign population is around 21% (Yes, as much as other cities would care to deny, Singapore is the most cosmopolitan city in the Asia Pacific region)...........

In 2002, when we had our recession, the government insisted on having a net flow of migrant workers despite outcry from the local polution....

WOW! AND WE NOW CALLED RACISTS.....I eat Nasi Lemak for breakfast, chicken bryani for lunch and wan ton mee for dinner, so what do you so called multi-culturalist eat for a day?

P.S Mr Scotty, if you are Chinese as you claimed to be, you would realised that our PM's surname is GOH and not TONG.
